Standardized test ranges only represent the less than 40% of applicants who elected to submit test scores as part of their application materials for fall 2023. UMass Amherst is test optional.
The middle 50% is a range, specifically the range of test scores or GPA between the 25th percentile and the 75th percentile for the given group. It is the “half in the middle” that’s left if you remove the top 25% and the bottom 25%. For example, at UMass Amherst last year the middle 50% testing range on the SAT for enrolling first-year students was 1330-1490. This means that of the 29,000 admitted first-year students, about 14,500 (the half in the middle) had a score that was in the range. From this you also know that about 7,250 of admitted students scored higher than this range, and about 7,250 scored a 1330 or below.
*GPA is based on academic courses only and weighted for Honors and College level courses per the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.
